I'm linking up with Aly & Molly for the 12 Days of Christmas Challenge!

DAY ONE

CHRISTMAS/HOLIDAY TRADITIONS

I very much enjoy traditions! It means there is always something to look forward to. My family didn’t have a lot of holiday traditions growing up. I hope to change that with my family and give them traditions they can pass down to their little family.

As a child, one of our family traditions was that we always opened our stockings on Christmas eve. Oh how fun it was to dump them out on the floor and sort through all the little stuff and get excited about ALL of it! My stocking mostly consisted of lip gloss, hair accessories, a new manicure set, nail polish, pens, pencils, and anything tiny that could be shoved into a stocking. I always thought our stockings were special because my mom made the designs on the front. The front side of all our stockings is Sesame Street but my mom flipped them over and used the back and put all of our nicknames on the top and a little design on them in sequins. I think mine is a butterfly. I haven’t seen the stockings in years due to a divorce and so for my side of the family Christmas has really been more of a hassle than an enjoyment. It really makes me sad. Maybe one day the excitement will come back.

Another tradition we had, was to read the story of the birth of Jesus Christ on Christmas morning before we opened presents. We would all gather around the tree and my dad would read from this huge white Bible that we only read from on Christmas morning. To be honest with you I didn’t really pay attention when my dad was reading it. I wanted to dig into those presents!! Now, I find so much more meaning to Christmas than I did as a kid and I really wish I knew where that bible was. I would LOVE to have it. Again, something else that was lost in the divorce.

When I was 14, I started my own tradition that has nothing to do with Christmas. This year will be the 15 year anniversary and not one year has been missed since 1995. It makes me happy that over the years I have introduced people to it and they know that on Christmas Eve exactly what I will be doing and they know there is no budging. I’m gonna do it even if it keeps me up all night! On Christmas Eve in 1995 my family rented some movies for the holiday which included The Might Ducks 2 and Sister Act 2. I stayed up late watching the movies and ever since then, on Christmas Eve, I can be found watching them and falling on love with them all over again. Last year, White Christmas was added to the list and hopefully this year we will have time to squeeze them all in. T

One last tradition I will leave you with is one called Bunko. Every December for the last few years my sister has hosted a Christmas Bunko party at her house. It has become a must and people look forward to it every year. Last year the theme was Ugly Christmas Sweater and this year it is Black Christmas. Everyone is supposed to come dressed in all black. I don’t really get it but I will at least wear a black sweater. T

Thanks for letting me share some of my traditions with you!

Happy Holidays,
